Mel Kobe

Operations Director

The Basketball Coaches of Canada are happy to announce that Mel Kobe has been selected as the association’s Operations Director intern. A Brock University Sport Management student, Mel will be graduating with honours in December 2021. Mel is also the cofounder of a non-profit Mel and Kerri’s Youth Recreational Facilities opening Vision Courts - a multi-court basketball facility in Kitchener-Waterloo in 2022. 


“I’m excited to join this organization and work with the country’s best coaches to create a community that coaches can turn to for advocacy and advanced coach development.”


Mel earned a full scholarship to USC-Upstate, transferring home to finish her USPORTS career at the University of Waterloo earning multiple OUA playoff berths. She graduated with a BA majoring in Philosophy, with minors in Legal Studies and Criminology, as well as a certificate in general Social Work. She continues to play basketball in the Grand River Senior Women's league and Ontario Masters tournaments.


As a coach, she is certified Train to Train, and is expected to be certified Train to Compete by the end of 2021. She is currently the head coach of the U19 Kitchener Vipers' Women's team. Her experience as an assistant coach, includes a year at McMaster University with the women’s team, winning an OUA championship in the 2005-2006 season and participating in the CIS National tournament in New Brunswick, and the high-school level with senior boys at St. Michael's Catholic Secondary School in Stratford, and U19 boys Waterloo Wildhawks.

We are fortunate to have her bring her wealth of experience to the table and are excited to see how the operational aspects will transform under her leadership!”


Mel's business background started in recreation working for the City of Waterloo at the Waterloo Recreation Complex as a customer service associate and the Township of Wellesley as a recreation facilities coordinator. Moving to the Investment and Insurance industry, Mel brings to the table 15 years of service and finance knowledge, along with experience in professional development, project management, onboarding new software, and rewards and recognition. 

Safia Hersi Operations Manager

The Basketball Coaches of Canada are pleased to announce Safia Hersi has been selected as the Basketball Coaches of Canada Operations Manager intern. 

”I’m so excited and gracious to be a part of such a great organization, working with Canada’s most renowned basketball coaches and staff will be an amazing opportunity to learn and grow.”


Roy Rana of the BCC added, “Safia brings an existing level of energy to the group and we know her passion of the game will allow the BCC to take another big leap forward with her and Mel taking the operational lead of the group.”
A recent Wilfrid Laurier University graduate earning her BSc double majoring in Biology and Psychology. Growing up a fan of basketball, she put her knowledge and enthusiasm in the sport holding the integral role as the Golden Hawks men’s basketball team manager from 2019-2021. 

Accountable for team services, digital marketing, and community relations, Safia has proven to be an asset in the gym and in the community. Bringing a well rounded skill set to the organization, Safia is driven to gain more experience in basketball operations with the goal of a career in professional basketball.
